Inaugurated in 1850 with a performance of Donizetti's La Favorita, Teatro Real was declared national monument. It is located in plaza de Oriente, just in front of the Royal Palace of Madrid, and it is a reference point for opera in the capital.
In 1868, after the revolution and the exile of the Queen Isabel II, the coliseum was named National Opera House.
For many years it was one of the most important European coliseums. Since its inauguration, it has suffered sinking, several fires and explosions. Nowadays it is a renovated building with an area of 65.000m2 and capacity for 1.750 people.
Teatro Real not only presents its own productions but also foreign ones, as well as a revival of its most successful creations.
