Wine Tour: Ribera del Duero/Rioja
In Amphitryon we recommend you to visit one of the two most prestigious designations of origin in Spain: Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
La Rioja Designation of Origin mostly includes wines that are elaborated in the autonomous communities of La Rioja and the Basque County and, to a lesser extent, in Navarra. There are three different production subareas called Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa, where wines with different characteristics are produced. The average annual output of Rioja wine is 250 millions of litres (85% of red wine and 15% of rosé and white wine). Rioja wines are fresh, aromatic, have a balanced composition and an excellent bouquet. Some of the most well-known wineries are: Marqués de Riscal, Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta, Cvne, Izadi, Luis Cañas or Baigorri.
Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin includes vineyards located in Castilla y León, in a strip on the basin of the river Duero, which is 115 kilometres long and 35 kilometres wide and is located in the junction of the provinces of Soria, Burgos, Segovia and Valladolid. Ribera del Duero wines are essentially red wines; 95% of grape is Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Some of the most famous wineries are; Vega Sicilia, Protos, Pesquera or Dominio de Pingus.
